Writing Never Arrives Naked
Book launch, Sydney

The Koori Centre at the University of Sydney played host to the launch of Writing Never Arrives Naked on 21 September. Aboriginal Studies Press was pleased that Ruby Langford Binibi did the honours as official launcher. Penny van Toorn reminded the audience that the book’s been ten years in the making and that she needed to leave Australia to gain the intellectual distance to create the work. That the book was launched during History Week was especially fitting.

A large crowd filled the big River Marquee on a cool Brisbane Writers’ Festival day on 14 September. In a short but powerful launch, the Hon John von Doussa, President of HREOC, spoke stirringly. Alf Lacey from the Stolen Wages Working Group also spoke. He brought the crowd to their feet for a minute’s silence to remember those who will have passed on before the stolen wages are returned.

Rob Riley
Book launch, Perth
An audience of more than 300 people, including the US-Consul-General joined the author and Rob Riley's family and friends in celebrating the launch of this wonderfully nuanced biography on the 10th anniversary of Rob Riley’s passing.

In this detailed and delicate biography, Quentin Beresford tells a story of triumph and of tragedy. I cannot think of a finer introduction to Aboriginal politics in the contemporary era. I urge all Australian citizens who care about reconciliation to read it.

Cleared Out
Perth International Festival

An enthralled Perth audience was treated to a multi-media and in-conversation retelling of the events so wonderfully captured in Cleared Out.

Authors Sue Davenport, Peter Johnson and Yuwali (with Thelma Judd), were joined by Terry Long, former WA Commissioner for Native Affairs, and Emeritus Prof. Bob Tonkinson.

Slides and film footage taken from the 1964 patrol were interwoven with Yuwali, Terry Long and Bob Tonkinson responding to questions about those momentous events in 1964. (Yuwali and Thelma had been in a group of women and children ‘brought in’ from their country which had become the site of the launching of the Woomera rockets.) The stage was surrounded by 6–8 paintings of Wirnpa country (Western Desert), as well as woven baskets, wooden bowls and digging sticks.

The event was part of the Perth International Festival, Writers’ Week on Sunday 26 February, 3-4pm.
